The second Test between India and South Africa in Guwahati has taken a dramatic turn, thanks to a remarkable fightback from South Africa lower order. Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen produced a stunning partnership that pushed the visitors to a massive first-innings total of 489 runs, leaving India under pressure on home soil.
Their partnership not only frustrated India bowlers but also created multiple historic records, some of which were achieved in India after 13 long years.
Marco Jansen Smashes 93, Breaks Viv Richards’ 51-Year Record
Marco Jansen may have missed a well-deserved century by just 7 runs, but his innings will be remembered for its sheer impact and fearless strokeplay. Batting at No. 8, Jansen smashed:
- 93 runs off 91 balls
- 6 fours and 7 massive sixes
During this explosive knock, he broke a 51-year-old record of West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards, who hit 6 sixes in Delhi in 1974. With 7 sixes, Jansen is now the overseas player with the most sixes in a Test innings on Indian soil.
Joins AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock in Elite List
Jansen’s 7 sixes also put him in an elite South African club. He is now:
Most Sixes in a Test Innings for South Africa (All Time)
- 7 – AB de Villiers vs Australia (2009)
- 7 – Quinton de Kock vs West Indies (2021)
- 7 – Marco Jansen vs India (2025)
Jansen has now matched two of South Africa’s biggest batting names.
Before Jansen fireworks, Senuran Muthusamy played one of the most important innings of his career. Batting at No. 7, he scored:
- 109 runs off 206 balls
- 10 fours, 2 sixes
His calm and mature century held South Africa innings together at a crucial time. With this knock, Muthusamy became only the third South African No. 7 to score a Test century against India.
The partnership between Muthusamy and Jansen created another rare milestone.
First time in 13 years that a visiting team had:
- Both No. 7 and No. 8 scoring fifty or more in the same Test innings on Indian soil.
Previously, this happened in 2016, when England Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid achieved the same in Chennai. South Africa’s lower order has repeated this rare feat after more than a decade.
India had a strong first day, but the momentum shifted completely due to South Africa’s aggressive yet composed batting approach. Their total of 489 runs has given them a powerful position in the match, and India now faces a huge challenge in the remaining days.
