India suffered a tough defeat in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur despite scoring a massive total of 358 runs. The visitors chased down the target with four balls left, taking the series to a 1-1 level. After the match, captain KL Rahul openly shared the reasons behind India’s loss and admitted that the team made mistakes in crucial phases of the game.
Rahul Admits Dew and Toss Played a Big Role
KL Rahul was very clear in his post-match statement – dew completely changed the match. Bowling in the second innings became extremely difficult as the ball kept slipping from the bowlers’ hands.
Rahul said:
“There was too much dew. Bowling became very tough. I’m even blaming myself for losing the toss because it played a big role today.”
He added that although India posted a strong total, the team had discussed adding 20–25 more runs in the final overs to give the bowlers extra cushion, but that didn’t happen.
Another major factor Rahul mentioned was fielding mistakes. A dropped catch – especially Yashasvi Jaiswal missing Aiden Markram – proved costly, as Markram went on to score a match-winning century.
Rahul said that India needed sharper fielding in pressure moments and that such mistakes allowed South African batters to settle and accelerate freely.
Rahul also pointed out that India’s lower order could not contribute enough in the end overs. Despite centuries from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, India fell short of the ideal finishing kick.
He admitted:
“Our lower order needed to add a few more runs. That would have made a difference.”
Interestingly, Rahul also revealed that he was originally supposed to bat at No. 6, but due to Kohli and Gaikwad’s long partnership, he moved up to No. 5 and felt confident after his fifty in the previous match.
Kohli & Gaikwad Receive Strong Praise
While disappointed with the loss, Rahul highlighted the superb batting performances of Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both of whom scored brilliant centuries.
- Kohli completed his 53rd ODI century
- Gaikwad scored his first-ever ODI hundred
- Both added a partnership of 195 runs
Rahul said watching Gaikwad shift gears after his fifty was “special,” and Kohli once again proved his class.

With the series tied at 1-1, the final ODI on 6 December in Visakhapatnam will act as the decider. India will need to fix their fielding lapses, improve death bowling, and plan better for dew conditions to clinch the series.
KL Rahul honest reflection after the defeat shows how aware the Indian team is of its shortcomings. While the batting looked world-class, the bowling and fielding could not match that level under challenging conditions. As the teams head into the series decider, India will aim to bounce back stronger and correct the mistakes made in Raipur.
