The opening day of the India vs South Africa 1st Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, turned into a spectacular showcase of India’s bowling strength, led by the sensational Jasprit Bumrah. After South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, the visitors hoped for a solid start, but the Indian pace spearhead delivered one of the finest spells seen in recent Test cricket, dismantling the Proteas innings almost single-handedly.
South Africa began confidently with openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton putting up a steady 57-run stand. Markram looked fluent during his stay, playing crisp drives and scoring a composed 31 runs. Rickelton too was shaping up well before Jasprit Bumrah changed the game in the space of a few overs. A lethal in-swinger uprooted Rickelton’s stumps, giving India the first breakthrough, and on the very next opportunity, Bumrah struck again—this time removing Markram with a perfect delivery that carried to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

What followed was a complete meltdown of the South African batting order. Captain Temba Bavuma lasted only 11 deliveries before Kuldeep Yadav trapped him cheaply for 3. Tony de Zorzi showed some resistance with a gritty 24, but no partnership lasted long enough to threaten India’s control. South Africa went from 57/0 to 125/5 and eventually folded for a modest 159.
Bumrah was at the heart of this collapse. His extraordinary figures of 5/27 not only powered India into a commanding position but also placed him into elite company among Indian bowlers. With this five-wicket haul -his 16th in Test cricket -Bumrah surpassed Ravichandran Ashwin’s tally of 151 bowled dismissals, becoming the third-highest Indian in this category behind only Kapil Dev (167) and Anil Kumble (186). His spell was also notable because he became the first Indian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul on the opening day of a home Test since Ishant Sharma in 2019.
Supporting Bumrah brilliantly were Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, each taking two wickets with tight, disciplined spells. Axar Patel chipped in with one wicket, completing a perfect all-round performance by India’s bowling unit.
The match also marked the much-anticipated return of Rishabh Pant to the Test side, adding excitement among fans as India begin their World Test Championship 2025–27 campaign.
With South Africa bowled out for just 159 on Day 1, India now walk into the second day with a golden opportunity to take full control of the Test match and build a match-winning first-innings lead at Eden Gardens.
