India clinched the five-match T20I series 2-1 after the final game at The Gabba, Brisbane was washed out due to heavy rain and lightning. Only 4.5 overs of play were possible, but the result did not affect India’s lead, allowing them to take home the series and also avenge their recent ODI defeat.
India Off to a Flying Start Before Rain Arrived
Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill came out with positive intent and attacked the Australian pacers from the start.
- India raced to 52/0 in 4.5 overs
- Abhishek Sharma was unbeaten on 23 off 13 balls
- Shubman Gill looked fluent with 29 off 14 balls
Just when the innings was gaining momentum, lightning forced the umpires to halt play. Soon after, heavy rain hit Brisbane, and the match was officially abandoned following a long delay of more than two hours.
India Win the Series 2-1
This series had a stop-start feel due to rain interruptions.
- 1st T20: Washed out due to rain
- 2nd T20: Australia won by 4 wickets
- 3rd T20: India bounced back with a 5-wicket win
- 4th T20: India sealed the series with a clinical performance
- 5th T20: Abandoned due to rain
With the final match canceled, India maintained their lead and sealed the series 2-1. This also means head coach Gautam Gambhir continues his streak of not losing a T20I series since taking charge.

Australia had defeated India 2-1 in the ODI series earlier on this tour. With this T20I win, India balanced the scales and ended the tour on a strong note. Several players impressed, including Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, and the aggressive opening pair of Abhishek and Gill.
With this T20I series wrapped up, India will now shift focus to upcoming assignments, including preparations for future ICC tournaments. Abhishek Sharma’s emergence, Gill’s form, and India’s bowling depth remain big positives from this series.
