India A began their unofficial ODI series against South Africa A in style, securing a thrilling 4-wicket victory in Rajkot on Thursday. Chasing a challenging target of 286 runs, the hosts reached the total in 49.3 overs, led by a magnificent century from Ruturaj Gaikwad and a composed finishing effort from Nitish Reddy. With this win, India A took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Anchors the Chase
Vice-captain Ruturaj Gaikwad played a captain’s knock under pressure, scoring a brilliant 117 runs off 129 balls, including 12 fours. He showcased immense patience and class throughout the innings, keeping the scoreboard ticking even as wickets fell around him. It was Gaikwad’s 17th List-A century and one of his finest in domestic cricket, coming at a crucial time when the team needed stability.
India A got a brisk start from Abhishek Sharma (31) and Gaikwad, adding 64 runs for the opening wicket. However, after the early dismissals of Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag, skipper Tilak Varma (39) steadied the innings with a crucial partnership alongside Gaikwad. Once the top order had laid the platform, Nitish Reddy (37 off 26 balls) and Nishant Sindhu (29 not out) ensured the chase stayed on course. Reddy’s quick boundaries and calculated aggression in the final overs sealed the game with style.
South Africa A’s Strong Comeback Despite Early Collapse
Batting first after losing the toss, South Africa A were in deep trouble at 53 for 5, courtesy of some fiery spells from Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, both picking up two wickets each. However, a strong recovery was led by Delano Potgieter (90 off 105 balls) and Dian Forrester (77 off 83), who stitched together a crucial 113-run stand for the sixth wicket. Later, Bjorn Fortuin added a quickfire 59 to help South Africa A post a competitive 285/9 in 50 overs.
Despite the fightback, India’s bowlers maintained discipline. Arshdeep Singh (2/59) and Harshit Rana (2/49) were impressive with the new ball, while Prasidh Krishna chipped in with one wicket.
With this win, India A have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second unofficial ODI will be played on November 16 at the same venue in Rajkot. South Africa A will look to bounce back, while India A aim to continue their momentum and seal the series.
