In the middle of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken a major decision that has sent shockwaves across the cricket world. The ICC has suspended the USA Cricket Board with immediate effect, citing repeated violations of responsibilities and governance issues.
Despite this suspension, the USA national team will still be allowed to participate in upcoming ICC tournaments, including the T20 World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will make a return to the Olympic stage.
Why Did ICC Suspend the USA Cricket Board?
The ICC board met virtually on 23 September 2025, and after months of monitoring and warnings, they finally decided to suspend USA Cricket. According to the official ICC statement, the decision was taken because of:
- Failure to implement a proper governance structure.
- Lack of progress in securing recognition as the official governing body under the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
- Actions that harmed the reputation of cricket in the USA and worldwide.
The ICC stressed that while this move is unfortunate, it was necessary to protect the long-term growth and credibility of cricket in the United States.
The suspension comes at a time when USA cricket was on the rise globally. In the 2024 T20 World Cup, which they co-hosted with West Indies, the USA team surprised everyone by defeating Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over match. Their fighting spirit earned global respect, and many Indian-origin players, including Saurabh Netravalkar, became household names after impressive performances.
While the board has been suspended, the players and national teams will not suffer direct consequences. They will continue to feature in ICC events:
- T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
- 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where USA will automatically qualify as the host nation.
This ensures that American cricketers still get the platform to perform, but the administrative setup must undergo major reforms.
What’s Next for USA Cricket?
The ICC has formed a special monitoring committee to oversee the restructuring of USA Cricket. Until the governance model is improved and transparency is ensured, the suspension will remain.
