Team India’s star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is all set to make his much-awaited return to competitive cricket later this month. After recovering from a thigh injury suffered during the Asia Cup 2025, Hardik will represent Baroda in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), marking his first appearance since September. His comeback will serve as crucial preparation ahead of India’s white-ball series against South Africa, which begins on November 30.
Hardik Comeback Path: From Rehab to Match Fitness
Hardik has been out of action since sustaining a left quadriceps injury during India’s Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka, which forced him to miss the final against Pakistan and the entire Australia series. Over the past few months, he has been undergoing intense rehabilitation and training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.
According to sources close to the board, Hardik has nearly completed his recovery and achieved full match fitness. If everything goes as per plan, the 32-year-old will feature in Baroda’s opening match on November 26 in Hyderabad. However, if there’s a slight delay in his “Return to Play” (RTP) clearance from the BCCI medical team, he is expected to join the squad by the second game.
A BCCI insider told The Times of India, “Hardik will not take any rest. Once he gets RTP approval, he will head straight to Hyderabad to play for Baroda. He has been training rigorously for weeks and is almost match-ready.”
Road to South Africa Series
India will host South Africa for a multi-format series, featuring two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is. The ODI series is scheduled from November 30 to December 6, with matches to be played in Ranchi, Raipur, and Visakhapatnam.
The selectors want Hardik to play at least one domestic game before returning to the national team setup. The SMAT fixture will provide him with the opportunity to test his bowling rhythm and match fitness before donning the India jersey again.

Eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup
Hardik return comes at a crucial time for India’s preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a vital component of India’s white-ball balance. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli nearing the twilight of their ODI careers, Hardik’s leadership and experience will play a major role in shaping India’s next-generation core.
If he performs well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Hardik is expected to be included in India’s squad for the South Africa series — marking the beginning of a new chapter in his international comeback.
