Urvil Patel: There were a number of talented players that came under the hammer at the IPL 2025 auction, and a number of them were unfortunate and went unsold. One such name was the wicket-keeper batter from Gujarat, Urvil Patel, who registered himself with a base price of INR 30 lac but didn’t get any buyers and went unsold.
But just after a day of the IPL 2025 auction, he has certainly caught the attention of the IPL franchise with a blistering century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The 26-year-old, who is playing for Gujarat in the tournament, has slammed the fastest T20 century by an Indian in history and made a massive statement that the IPL franchises missed a big chance of having him in their teams for the IPL 2025.

Urvil Patel slammed fastest T20 century by an Indian during SMAT 2024
The 26-year-old opener registered this remarkable milestone off just 28 balls to become the fastest Indian batter to clock a T20 century. In a game of Group B against Tripura at Emerald Heights International School Ground in Indore, he achieved this massive record. Batting first, Tripura scored 155/8 in the first innings.
Chasing the score, Urvil Patel reached his fifty off 15 balls and completed his next 50 runs off 13 balls. He slammed a 28-ball century and made an unbeaten 113 runs off 35 balls, with seven fours and 12 sixes at a strike rate of 322.85. As a result, Gujarat chased down the total in just 10.2 overs and made 156/2 to win the game by 8 wickets. For his record-breaking effort, Urvil was named Player of the Match.
Earlier, the record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian was held by Rishabh Pant. In 2018, Pant slammed a 32-ball century against Himachal Pradesh at Arun Jaitley Stadium while playing for Delhi. The 28-ball century by Urvil Patel is now the second-fastest hundred in all T20 cricket history. Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan has the record for the fastest T20 century off 27 balls against Cyprus in 2024 at Happy Valley Ground.
Not just in T20s, Urvil Patel also holds the record for the second-fastest List A century by an Indian batter. He scored a 41-ball hundred for Gujarat in Chandigarh in November 2023 against Arunachal Pradesh. Urvil has been part of Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2023, but he couldn’t make his debut, and in the IPL 2025 auction, he went unsold. IPL franchises must be scratching their heads after his performance. If he gets lucky, he might get a chance as a replacement in the middle of the season.
