Cricket fans in eastern Uttar Pradesh have a big reason to celebrate. A new international-standard cricket stadium will be built in Gorakhpur, with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) committing financial support of ₹60 crore under its CSR initiative.
The project moved forward after the Uttar Pradesh government and IOCL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Lucknow on February 19, 2026, in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The stadium is expected to be completed by December 2027 and will become a major sports hub for the Purvanchal region.
A Major Boost for Cricket in Eastern Uttar Pradesh
The upcoming stadium is designed to meet international standards and will have a seating capacity of around 30,000 spectators. The facility will include modern infrastructure such as high-quality pitches, practice facilities, floodlights, advanced dressing rooms, and a media center.
The total project cost is estimated at around ₹339 crore (with some estimates going higher). Along with IOCL’s ₹60 crore contribution, other public sector companies are also supporting the project through CSR funding.

Vision Behind the Project
The state government sees the stadium as more than just a sporting venue. The goal is to create opportunities for young cricketers from eastern Uttar Pradesh and to promote sports development, tourism, and local economic growth.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the facility will act as a strong platform for youth talent and help the region become part of India’s growing sports ecosystem. Officials also highlighted that a similar international stadium project in Varanasi is progressing and expected to be ready by mid-2026.
IOCL leadership described the partnership as part of their commitment to supporting infrastructure and community development in Uttar Pradesh.
Once completed, the stadium could host domestic tournaments, IPL matches, and potentially international games in the future. For a region that has produced passionate cricket followers but lacked top-level facilities, this project could be a game-changer.
