The much-awaited 2024 ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held from June 2 in the United States of America and the West Indies. The tournament opener will be played between the USA and Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. The tournament will feature 20 teams and they have been divided into four groups of five teams.
The ICC will implement the latest Stop Clock Rule, which is introduced to ensure the timely completion of limited-overs matches, in the forthcoming tournament. Notably, this rule will be compulsory for all limited-overs games starting from June. Notably, the rule was introduced in December last year and following its remarkable success during the trial period permitted the authorities to make it mandatory.
As per the rule, the bowling team should start the net over within 60 seconds of finishing the last one. The countdown timer will be displayed on the ground which will be initiated by the third umpire. The fielding team’s captain will be warned twice if they fail to start on time. Subsequently, a five-run penalty will be imposed on the bowling team.
Meanwhile, if a new batter comes to the crease after the end of an over, the umpire might call a drinks break. Apart from this, the rule will also be void, if the treatment for an on-field injury was approved by the umpire or a situation or if any unforeseen circumstance arises on the ground.
In addition, given the unpredictable weather conditions in the hosting countries, there is a chance of rain during the tournament. As per the ICC rule, if rain interrupts the games, points will be shared, and at least five overs will be required in group-stage matches to contest a game. Meanwhile, for knockout matches in order to determine a result, a minimum of 10 overs must be bowled. Additionally, if rain plays spoilsport in semifinals or final, an additional 190 minutes will be given, along with a reserve day.
