England have announced a 12-member squad for the opening Test of the Ashes 2025, keeping the final playing XI a mystery until match day. The first Test begins on 22 November in Perth, where a pace-friendly pitch is expected, but England have surprised many by naming spinner Shoaib Bashir in the 12-man group.
The team will be led by Ben Stokes, who continues to captain England in the longest format.
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the Ashes was the fitness of Mark Wood. The fast bowler had walked off during the warm-up game for scans, raising doubts about his availability. However, Mark Wood has been declared fully fit and bowled with full intensity during England’s latest training session.
His return strengthens England pace attack, which already includes Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse.
Despite Perth traditionally offering help to fast bowlers, England have shown faith in young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, selecting him ahead of all-rounder Will Jacks.
His inclusion means England are open to playing a spinner if conditions allow. The final decision will be taken on the morning of the Test.
After scoring 100 and 90 in the warm-up match against England Lions, Ollie Pope has cemented his place at No. 3. Youngster Jacob Bethell, who was in contention for a debut, will have to wait longer as he has not been included in the 12-man squad.
