New Zealand star batter Daryl Mitchell has climbed to the top of the latest ICC ODI Batting Rankings, becoming the new World No. 1. The Kiwi all-rounder overtook India’s Rohit Sharma after a brilliant performance in the first ODI against West Indies, where he smashed a superb 119-run century.
This is the first time in his career that Mitchell has reached the No. 1 position in ODI cricket. With this milestone, he has joined an elite list of New Zealand players. He is now only the second New Zealander in history to become the No.1 ODI batter, after the legendary Glenn Turner, who achieved the feat back in 1979.
New Zealand has produced many world-class batters over the years, including Martin Crowe, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Nathan Astle, and Martin Guptill. But surprisingly, none of them ever claimed the top spot in ICC ODI batting charts.
Mitchell’s recent form has been exceptional, and his latest century pushed his ICC rating to 782 points – the highest of his career. With this, he now sits one point above India’s Rohit Sharma, who is ranked second with 781 points.
Rohit Sharma Slips to No. 2
Indian captain Rohit Sharma, despite consistent performances this year, has slipped to the second position with a rating of 781. The margin between Mitchell and Rohit is extremely small, which means the No.1 spot may switch again depending on the upcoming matches.
Other Movers: Babar Azam, Shreyas Iyer & Charith Asalanka Shift
The updated rankings also show key changes:
- Babar Azam climbs to No.6 with a 722 rating
- Shreyas Iyer moves to No.8
- Charith Asalanka drops three spots to No.9
- Shai Hope stays at No.10
Indian star Shubman Gill remains at No.4, while Virat Kohli stays firm at No.5.
