Chennai Super Kings have been handed an early concern ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season. Their high-value uncapped signing Prashant Veer, bought for ₹14.20 crore at the auction, has suffered a shoulder injury during domestic cricket, putting his early-season availability in doubt.
The development comes weeks before the IPL is expected to begin in late March, adding uncertainty to CSK squad planning.
What Happened to Prashant Veer?
Prashant Veer picked up the injury while fielding in a Ranji Trophy 2025–26 match for Uttar Pradesh against Jharkhand in Lucknow. While attempting to stop a shot at mid-off, he dived to his right and landed awkwardly on his shoulder.
Medical scans later confirmed a Grade-2 shoulder tear, forcing him to leave the match immediately and miss the remainder of the fixture.
How Long Is the Recovery?
A Grade-2 shoulder injury typically requires around three weeks of recovery, depending on rehabilitation progress. As a result, Prashant is expected to miss the rest of the ongoing Ranji season and will be racing against time to be fully fit for the opening phase of IPL 2026.
CSK are expected to closely monitor his rehab before taking a final call on his match readiness.
Why This Is a Big Deal for CSK
CSK invested heavily in Prashant Veer at the auction, viewing him as a left-arm spin all-rounder who can add balance to the side. His ability to contribute in the middle overs with the ball and chip in with handy runs lower down the order made him a strategic pick.
An early absence could force CSK to reshuffle combinations or rely on backup options in the first few matches.
Prashant Veer Career Snapshot
| Format | Matches | Wickets | Runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class | 2 | 2 | 7 |
| List A | 8 | 10 | 133 |
| T20 | 9 | 12 | 112 |
While his domestic sample size is still small, CSK faith in his potential was clear from the auction price.
The focus now shifts to recovery and fitness clearance. If Prashant responds well to rehab, he could still be available shortly after the tournament begins. CSK medical team will avoid rushing him back, keeping long-term fitness in mind.
