The opening ceremony will start at 6:30 PM IST, with the toss at 7:30 PM, followed by the beginning of the first innings at 8:00 PM IST. Taking place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, this high octane opening ceremony will set the perfect tone for the first match of this campaign between defending champions, Chennai Super Kings versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This will be the ninth time that CSK will play the opening game of the campaign.
CSK will come at the toss with a new face this season, in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad who has been handed the captaincy by MS Dhoni. This was a decision taken by Dhoni himself as confirmed by CSK’s CEO Kasi Vishwanathan,
“Whatever Dhoni does, it is in the best interest of the team. I got to know of the decision just before the captains’ meeting. You have to respect his decision, it is his call.”
With a rumoured mega auction set to take place before the next campaign, this might be the last season of MS Dhoni as a player in the Indian Premier League.
This will be the first time ever in the seventeen years of IPL that neither of Dhoni, Rohit or Virat will lead a side in the IPL.
