The race for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is on, and the mega event will start on June 1. Team India are among the favourites to lift the title, and Rohit Sharma will be leading the team in the tournament. This will be my final assignment as head coach for Rahul Dravid. He has already confirmed that he is not willing to reapply for the position.
That is why the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened the applications for the head coach. A number of candidates applied, and there was some news that the BCCI is looking for a foreign coach and has approached some former Australian cricketers. However, later, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah ended these rumours in one of his tatements. Well, one name that is the frontrunner for this position is Gautam Gambhi.
Gautam Gambhir is likely to be India’s next Head Coach – Reports
The former Indian opener, who was a key part of India’s triump in the T20 World Cup 2007 and the 2011 ODI World Cup, recently mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title. KKR beat Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, and at that time, Jay Shah was seen having some words with Gambhir, which sparked rumors that the Southpaw could be India’s next head coach. However, it looks like it is the right news.
Meanwhile, a report by Cricbuzz confirmed that Gambhir has told his close people that he is willing to look for this role. Notably, Monday was the last date to apply for the open application. However, the Wikipedia page for the Indian coaches confirms that Gambhir is the next head coach. It is showing on the page that his tenure has started in 2024. Though there is still no official statement by the BCCI, many sources are claiming that this is very much possible, and we might see Gambhir taking on the responsibility during the end stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Team India are in desperate need of an ICC title. Since 2013, they have played a number of knockout matches but couldn’t win the championship. In this regard, the BCCI has tried a number of coaches, but no one could lead India to glory. Gautam Gambhir, who is known to have a great head on his shoulder, has a great record in the IPL. He has led KKR to two titles as captain and as mentor, and he recently did the same. After the recent exploit of KKR, fans also want Gambhir to be the next head coach. With the 2025 Champions Trophy and World Test Championship 2026 coming up, he can be a good option.
