Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured one of their most disappointing campaigns in IPL 2025, finishing well outside the playoff race with just three wins. But amid the setbacks, two young names—Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis—emerged as the brightest positives, offering hope for the franchise rebuilding plans heading into IPL 2026.
At just 17, Ayush Mhatre became a revelation for CSK after joining the squad as an injury replacement for skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. His fearless batting and ability to take on bowlers from the very first ball added much-needed energy to CSK top order, which had been struggling with consistency.
- In just 6 matches, Mhatre scored 206 runs at a blistering strike rate of 187.27.
- He quickly became CSK third-highest run-getter of the season, despite playing fewer games than senior pros.
- His attacking style, particularly in the powerplay overs, gave CSK a fresh spark when the rest of the batting line-up faltered.
His maturity beyond years has already made him a fan favorite, with many believing he could be CSK long-term opener.
South Africa Dewald Brevis, brought in as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh, proved equally valuable in CSK middle order. Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his resemblance to AB de Villiers’ batting style, Brevis delivered impactful cameos that helped stabilize innings after frequent top-order collapses.
- In 5 games, Brevis scored 168 runs at a strike rate of 166.33.
- His innings of 42 off 25 balls against Delhi showcased his power-hitting, including 12 sixes across the season.
- Brevis often provided the perfect platform for finishers like Shivam Dube to capitalize.
Reflecting on his stint with CSK, Brevis shared how special the opportunity felt:
“To wear the yellow jersey and walk out at Chepauk was a dream come true. CSK gave me a chance when I least expected it, and I just wanted to play my role for the team. The atmosphere was electric, and I’ll always carry the support of the fans with me.”
On his approach to batting, he added:
“I’ve always believed in expressing myself. Whether it’s counter-attacking when the team is under pressure or finishing strong, I just try to enjoy every moment. Playing alongside legends at CSK has taught me so much, and I want to build on that in the coming seasons.”
His ability to counter-attack under pressure made him one of CSK most reliable middle-order options in the latter stages of the season.
While MS Dhoni CSK struggled to find rhythm in IPL 2025, the emergence of Mhatre and Brevis has given the franchise a clear direction. Alongside Gaikwad, Noor Ahmad, and Matheesha Pathirana, CSK may already have the core group of players who can lead them into a new era.
The franchise, known for its loyalty to players, will now face crucial decisions about letting go of underperforming seniors and putting its faith in this new generation of talent.
Despite a disappointing season, CSK fans have reason to be optimistic. The rise of Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis signals that the rebuilding phase is already underway. If nurtured well, these young guns could form the backbone of a rejuvenated CSK squad in IPL 2026 and beyond.
