Australia have named a 15-member squad for the opening Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series against England, starting November 21 in Perth. With regular skipper Pat Cummins ruled out due to injury, Steve Smith will step in as captain for the first Test.
Labuschagne Returns, Constas Dropped
The selectors have recalled Marnus Labuschagne, who has been in superb domestic form, while young opener Sam Constas has been dropped following poor performances in the West Indies series. In his place, Jake Weatherald – the leading run-scorer in the last Sheffield Shield season — has earned a maiden call-up and could open alongside Usman Khawaja.
Chief selector George Bailey said, “The team is well-balanced with a mix of experience and new energy. We are excited to begin the home summer with strong momentum.”
Smith to Lead in Cummins’ Absence
With Cummins nursing a minor injury, he is expected to travel with the team and may return for the second Test in Brisbane. Smith’s experience as captain adds stability to the lineup, supported by seasoned stars like Mitchell Starck, Nathan Lyon, and Travis Head.
