The latest development surrounding Asia Cup 2025 reveals that the T20I-style tournament is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 5 to 21. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has submitted the final version of the draft for the 17th edition of the tournament, with renowned venues coming to light – Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
This edition will feature eight teams, making it one of the most expansive Asia Cups to date. The five ICC full members — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh — earned automatic qualification. UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong, who secured their spots through the 2024 ACC Premier Cup held in Oman, will join the full members.
Format and Groups
In a revised structure, the eight teams will be divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will progress to a Super Four stage, where they will play in a single-group format. The top two teams from the Super Four will then face off in the final on September 21.
- Group A: India, Pakistan, UAE, Hong Kong
- Group B: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Oman
BCCI on India vs Pakistan clash in Asia Cup?
Even though there is uncertainty around this high-voltage match, India and Pakistan lie in the same group. There is still a valid question mark over the likelihood of this intense clash, as a recent match between India Champions and Pakistan Champions was called off in the World Championship of Legends after a pile of criticism. The political tensions are still hovering around participation in a match where Pakistan is at the other end after Pahalgam terror attacks and quick response with Operation Sindoor. All eyes will be on official statements by the BCCI covering the heat over the India vs Pakistan match following cross-border conflict in April and May 2025.
🏆 Defending Champions and Past Context
India, the defending champions, lifted the 2023 Asia Cup title by defeating Sri Lanka in a one-sided ODI final. That tournament was played under a hybrid model across Pakistan and Sri Lanka due to political constraints.
This time, with the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, the tournament format has reverted to T20Is — aligning with teams’ global preparation plans.
With high-profile rivalries, emerging talent from Associate nations, and crucial preparation ahead of major ICC events, the Asia Cup 2025 promises a thrilling prelude to global T20 action.
