Australia’s preparations for the upcoming Ashes 2025 series have taken a massive hit as senior fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of the first Test in Perth due to a hamstring injury. The series begins on 21 November, but the hosts will now have to start without one of their most experienced pacers.
Hazlewood, who has taken 295 wickets in Tests, picked up the injury during the Sheffield Shield match while representing New South Wales against Victoria. Initially, early scans showed no major concern, but a second detailed scan confirmed a strain, forcing his withdrawal from the opening Ashes fixture.
Cricket Australia Confirms the Injury
Cricket Australia released an official statement saying that Hazlewood underwent repeat scans, which confirmed a hamstring strain. As a result, the pacer will not travel to Perth and has been ruled out of the series opener at the WACA.
To strengthen their pace reserves, Australia have drafted in Michael Neser, who will join the squad as cover for both Hazlewood and Sean Abbott—another pacer who has also been sidelined due to injury. Neser has previously played two Tests and made his debut against England in the 2021 Ashes.
Losing Hazlewood is a significant blow for Australia. The tall right-arm quick has been a cornerstone of the Australian Test attack for nearly a decade, known for his accuracy, seam movement and ability to extract bounce on Australian pitches. His absence in Perth—known for its pace-friendly conditions—will be deeply felt.
With 295 Test wickets, Hazlewood is approaching the elite 300-club, and his experience would have been crucial in setting the tone for the series.
Michael Neser Gets the Call-Up
In Hazlewood’s absence, Michael Neser is expected to play a more prominent role. The 34-year-old has been one of Australia’s most consistent domestic performers and has often been unlucky to miss out due to the presence of big names like Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood.
Now, he gets another opportunity to prove his worth in the biggest rivalry in Test cricket.
Australia’s Bowling Combination in Focus
With Hazlewood and Abbott unavailable, Australia may rely on a combination of:
- Pat Cummins
- Mitchell Starc
- Michael Neser
- Cameron Green (all-rounder)
This reshuffle puts extra responsibility on Cummins and Starc as Australia look to start the series strongly at home.
