West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a memorable 12-season journey with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Although he has hung up his boots as a player, Russell will continue his association with KKR in a new and unique role – Power Coach – starting from IPL 2026.
Russell revealed his decision through an emotional video on Instagram, thanking the KKR management, fans, and team owners for their support over the years. KKR had released Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 mega auction, sparking speculation about his future. However, the franchise soon confirmed that the star all-rounder would join the support staff as Power Coach.
Andre Russell joined KKR in 2014 and became one of the most explosive match-winners in the history of the tournament. Across 133 matches for the franchise, he played several unforgettable innings and was a key part of KKR’s championship wins in 2014 and 2024.
Before joining KKR, Russell started his IPL career with Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in 2012 and 2013.
Despite his iconic status, Russell struggled with form in IPL 2025. In 13 innings, he scored only 167 runs and picked 8 wickets. After an underwhelming season, KKR released him ahead of the 2026 auction.
Still, the franchise trusted the value he brings to the dressing room and created a new role designed specifically for him.
What Is a Power Coach?
The concept of Power Coach is new in cricket. While teams traditionally have batting, bowling, and fielding coaches, a power coach is responsible for a more specialised area – power-hitting and finishing skills.
Role of a Power Coach
- Trains batters to improve their power-hitting technique
- Helps players prepare for slog overs and high-pressure finishing
- Guides youngsters on shot selection and bat swing mechanics
- Adds intensity and energy to match simulations and practice sessions
- Works closely with middle-order big hitters
Russell said the term ‘Power Coach’ suits him perfectly because of the way he has played throughout his career – strong bat swing, explosive batting, and high on-field energy.
Russell Statement on Retirement and New Role
In his video announcement, Russell said he felt it was the right time to retire from the IPL, despite still playing in global T20 leagues.
He said:
- “I have decided to retire from the IPL, but I am not leaving cricket.”
- “KKR has given me love, respect, and unforgettable memories.”
- “Now begins a new chapter. You will see me as the Power Coach of KKR in 2026.”
He also thanked KKR CEO Venky Mysore and franchise co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for believing in him.
