West Indies’ preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against India have suffered a major setback. Just three days before the first Test begins on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been ruled out due to a recurring lower-back injury.
Injury Concerns for Joseph
Joseph complained of discomfort during training last week, and subsequent scans confirmed a degeneration in his previously resolved back problem. The right-arm pacer had been a vital part of West Indies’ bowling attack, particularly after his impressive performances in the recent home series against Australia. Losing him at such a crucial stage is a significant blow to the Caribbean side, who have already struggled in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Replacement Named: Jediah Blades
The West Indies Cricket Board announced Jediah Blades as Joseph’s replacement. Blades is currently part of the team’s limited-overs series against Nepal in Sharjah. Once the series concludes, he will travel to India to join the Test squad. At just 23, Blades brings energy and potential, but he lacks the experience Joseph carried into the longest format.

In a surprising twist, the selectors approached former captain Jason Holder to fill the vacant spot. However, Holder declined, citing a planned medical procedure. His absence further depletes the squad’s depth, leaving captain Roston Chase with limited senior options in the bowling department.

Double Setback for Pace Attack
Joseph’s injury is the second major setback for the West Indies pace unit. Earlier this week, Shamar Joseph was also ruled out of the series due to an undisclosed injury. The selectors have since called up Johann Layne to replace him. Without their two frontline seamers, the West Indies’ bowling attack looks considerably weakened ahead of the India challenge.

- Jayden Seales
The upcoming series is the first Test assignment for West Indies in the new WTC cycle. With Joseph and Shamar both out, the visitors will have to rely heavily on Jayden Seales and the relatively inexperienced attack. Against a strong Indian batting lineup at home, this could tilt the balance further in India’s favor.
Still, West Indies have often thrived in adversity, and their young replacements now have the opportunity to step up and make a mark.
