Afghanistan’s journey in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has reached a critical stage. After a tough start in Group D, the team finally registered their first win by defeating UAE, but their qualification chances for the Super 8 are no longer in their control.
As of February 16, Afghanistan remain mathematically in the race, but the road ahead is extremely difficult. Their qualification now depends not only on their own performance but also on results involving other teams.
Group D Points Table Situation
| Team | Matches | Wins | Points | Net Run Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| South Africa | 3 | 3 | 6 | Qualified |
| New Zealand | 3 | 2 | 4 | +0.701 |
| Afghanistan | 3 | 1 | 2 | -0.215 |
| UAE | 3 | 1 | 2 | -0.797 |

South Africa have already secured a Super 8 spot. The second qualification place is currently in New Zealand’s control, leaving Afghanistan with only a narrow path forward.
Afghanistan Results So Far
| Date | Match | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 8 | vs New Zealand | Lost by 5 wickets |
| Feb 11 | vs South Africa | Lost after second Super Over |
| Feb 16 | vs UAE | Won by 5 wickets |
The win against UAE, powered by Azmatullah Omarzai all-round performance, kept Afghanistan alive in the tournament, but earlier defeats have hurt their Net Run Rate.
What Afghanistan Need to Qualify
Afghanistan have one match left, against Canada on February 19. To qualify for the Super 8, the following conditions must be met:
- Afghanistan must defeat Canada by a big margin to significantly improve their Net Run Rate.
- New Zealand must lose to Canada in their final group match.
- Even after that, Afghanistan’s NRR must surpass New Zealand’s +0.701.
If New Zealand win their final match, Afghanistan will be eliminated regardless of their own result.

Why the Task Is Difficult
Afghanistan’s current Net Run Rate is negative, which means they need a massive win to close the gap. At the same time, New Zealand are in good form, making an upset against Canada unlikely.
This combination makes Afghanistan’s qualification scenario extremely challenging, though not impossible.

Team Still Fighting for a Miracle
Despite the tough situation, Afghanistan continue to rely on their strong spin attack and experienced all-rounders like Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Azmatullah Omarzai. The team management and players have maintained a positive approach, focusing on winning their final match first.
The key game to watch will be New Zealand vs Canada on February 17. If Canada manage a surprise victory, Afghanistan’s hopes will receive a major boost.
