India young opener Abhishek Sharma produced a breathtaking display of power-hitting as he blasted 74 runs off just 39 balls, guiding India to a six-wicket win over Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 clash on Sunday. Chasing 172, India stormed home in just 18.5 overs, with Abhishek leading the charge and earning the Player of the Match award.
The match, however, wasn’t all smiles. Tempers flared in the middle overs when Abhishek had a heated exchange with Pakistan pacers Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf. Cameras captured the fiery moment, but it was after the game that the 23-year-old explained what triggered the verbal duel.
“They were provoking us without any reason and I didn’t like it,” Abhishek said after receiving his award. “So I decided to answer back with my bat. My focus was on helping the team, but if someone tries to get under your skin, you have to stay strong. I’m glad I could finish the job for my Team.”

Abhishek fearless batting set the tone for India chase. Alongside Shubman Gill, who scored a fluent 47 off 28 balls, the duo added a blistering 105 runs for the opening wicket in just 49 deliveries, putting Pakistan bowlers under immense pressure. Their aggressive start meant India were well ahead of the required rate, making the rest of the chase a formality despite a few late wickets.
Pakistan, who had earlier posted 171 for 5, were left ruing missed chances. Their innings was built around Sahibzada Farhan steady half-century, but a collapse after the drinks break limited them to a below-par total. India fielding, however, was far from perfect. Four catches were put down, including an early chance off Farhan, but the batting brilliance of Abhishek and Gill ensured those lapses didn’t hurt the final outcome.
Abhishek credited his long-standing partnership with Gill as a key factor in their success. “We’ve been playing together since school days, so we understand each other’s game really well,” he said. “When you have that trust, you don’t need to say much on the field. We just look at each other and know what to do.”
With this victory, India made a commanding start to their Super 4 campaign, while Pakistan now face a quick turnaround before their next match against Sri Lanka. India will take a two-day break before meeting Bangladesh, carrying the confidence of yet another statement win over their arch-rivals.
