The mega cricket event is set to return with the 2027 World Cup, featuring 44 matches in South Africa out of 54 matches, while Namibia and Zimbabwe are also in line to host 10 matches. The blueprint for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup has been revealed.
According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Men’s World Cup will take place in October and November 2027. In a latest announcement made on Thursday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) revealed that the country will gear up with eight cricket stadiums, with Johannesburg, Cape Town and more venues to host 44 matches. They clarified that Namibia and Zimbabwe will host the rest of the 10 matches.
Pearl Maphoshe, who is the chairperson of CSA, stated that CSA is committed to hosting international events showcasing the culture of South Africa, with an abundance of space for unity, diversity and inclusivity.
Zimbabwe and South Africa co-hosted the ICC World Cup 2003 alongside Kenya, with Australia lifting the coveted trophy for the second time in a row. After a gap of nearly two decades, the continent is hosting the ODI World Cup, as the majority of matches will be played in South Africa. In 2007, South African soil hosted the ICC T20 World Cup. In the 50-over format, they played as a home team in the ICC Champions Trophy 2009. In white ball cricket, the continent never won the title, but they narrowly missed the chance to win the final in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where India knocked out the dreams of South Africa.
