Kenny Smith Early Life and Career
Kenny Smith was born in Brooklyn on 8th March, 1965. However, he was raised in Queens, spending most of his time in the LeFrak City neighbourhood. Smith used to play Basketball at Riverside Church in New York and later joined Stephen A. Halsey Junior High School in Rego Park, Queens. He did his high-schooling from Archbishop Molloy High School, where he sharpened his Basketball skills under Jack Curran, who has the most wins in New York City and New York State history as a High-School Head Coach.
Smith began his college career with North Carolina where he met junior Michael Jordan and senior Sam Perkin. He also led North Carolina to the Elite Eight in 1985, where they went to lose against the eventual national champion Villanova. He was named Consensus All-American (1st Team) as a senior in 1987.
Kenny Smith was a part of the United States National Basketball team that won the Gold Medal in the 1986 FIBA World Championship, along with David Robinson, Muggsy Bogues and Steve Kerr. He was the second top-scorer for the US in that tournament with 14.7 points per game. He scored 23 points in the US’s 87-85 win over the Soviet Union to win the Gold Medal.
Smith was picked by Sacramento Kings in the 1987 NBA Draft as the sixth overall pick. With his stellar performance for the Kings averaging 13.8 points and 7.1 assists per game, Smith was named in the NBA All-Rookie Team (1st Team). He was traded to Atlanta Hawks for the 1989-90 season, where he was selected as a reserve player and scored at an average of 7.7 points per game.
After one season with the Hawks, Smith was traded to Houston Rockets ahead of NBA 1990. He played six seasons with the Rockets and was also a part of their back-to-back title winning campaign in 1994 and 1995 respectively. After getting released by the Rockets ahead of the 1996 season, Smith got signed by Detroit Pistons. However, he only played nine games for the Pistons and was signed by the Denver Nuggets before he played his final NBA season as player in 1997.
