India has indeed hoisted the Cricket World Cup twice, making us proud in 1983 and then again in 2011. Alongside Australia and the West Indies, we stand tall as one of the teams with multiple World Cup wins.
Back in ’83, it was the fourth edition of the World Cup, and England was hosting from June 9 to June 25. Led by Kapil Dev, our Indian team did the unexpected and defeated the West Indies at the Lord’s ground in England. That win was a shocker to everyone because the West Indies were the top team then, having won the title before.
Jump to 2011, the World Cup’s tenth edition, which we got the chance to host along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, from February 19 to April 2. With M.S. Dhoni as the captain, India triumphed in the final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That win was historic, as it marked the first time a host nation won the World Cup on their home ground.
