The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) started this T20 league in 2008 to introduce franchise cricket and utilize the market of the T20 cricket that was on high strides after India’s triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Many legendary cricketers from all over the world have been a part of the cash-rich league throughout the years and also played a crucial role in the growth of the league. However, there are a very players who have been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008 and will be seen playing again in the upcoming season of the tournament in 2024. 1. MS Dhoni
Arguably, one of the best IPL captains, MS Dhoni made his first appearance in the cash-rich league in its inaugural season in 2008. He was picked by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and went on to become the captain of the franchise after he led India to the historic T20 World Cup triumph in 2007. Under his captaincy, CSK have emerged as the champions five times (in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023) and will be coming as the defending champions in IPL 2024. However, Dhoni has also played for Rising Pune Supergiants in IPL 2016 and 2017 when CSK were banned from the league due to allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting. He is the face of CSK and among the most valuable players in the IPL. Now, after 16 years, Dhoni is set to lead CSK in one more season of the IPL in 2024, which is also likely to be his last outing in the lucrative T20 league.
2. Virat Kohli
One of the biggest names in the IPL, Virat Kohli first appeared in the cash-rich league in 2008. He was picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for ₹12 Lakhs after he led the Indian team to the U-19 World Cup triumph in Malaysia. He came as a promising youngster in 2008 and is currently the all-time leading run scorer of the tournament with 7263 runs from 237 matches at an average of 37.25 with 50 half-centuries and seven hundreds. The prolific batter has been a part of RCB all the previous 16 editions and will play for the same team again in IPL 2024. He is the ‘Poster Boy” of RCB and has also been the captain of the franchise from 2013 to 2021. Kohli had a tremendous season in IPL 2016 where he amassed a record-breaking 973 runs from 16 matches at an average of 81.08 along with four centuries. He led RCB to their third IPL final in that edition where they ended up losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the title clash. Despite not winning the cup, Virat Kohli is one of the biggest players in the IPL and will be seen playing for RCB for the straight 17th edition in 2024.
3. Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was a find of the Indian team in the 2007 T20 World Cup, with his half-century against South Africa in the league stage and a quickfire 30 against Pakistan in the final. However, no one would have imagined that this talented young cricketer would go on to become one of the most successful captains in the IPL. Rohit began his IPL journey in 2008 after the Deccan Chargers (DC) acquired his services for ₹3 crore. He was a part of DC’s title triumph in 2009 and also showcased his bowling with a hattrick in a match against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the same edition. In 2011 Rohit joined MI for ₹9.20 crore and went on to become the captain of the franchise in midseason in 2013. It turned out to be a breakthrough year for Rohit as he led MI to their maiden IPL title in 2013, and went on to repeat the triumph in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. Now Rohit is set to feature in the IPL 2024 as a player as MI have bought back Hardik Pandya, who will take over the captaincy in the upcoming season of the tournament.
4. Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja was among the young players who were part of the Indian team that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2008. He was picked by Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the inaugural season of the IPL for ₹12 Lakhs. Jadeja has been one of the main players in the cash-rich league for the last 16 years and will be seen playing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 17th edition of the tournament. He has been a part of four title winning campaigns including one for RR in 2008 and three for CSK in 2018, 2021, and 2023. Jadeja has delivered some memorable performances with both bat and ball throughout his IPL career and will look for another memorable season in IPL 2024
5. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan is one of the senior players in the Indian team and will be seen playing 17th consecutive IPL season in 2024. Dhawan came as a promising youngster after Delhi Daredevil (now known as Delhi Capitals) picked him ahead of IPL 2008 for ₹12 Lakhs and had a decent season with 340 runs from 14 matches at an average of 37.77. Now, he is in the second spot in the list of all time leading run scorers of the IPL with 6617 runs from 217 matches at an average of 35.39 along with 50 half centuries and two hundreds. Dhawan has played for different IPL teams like Delhi Capitals (DC), Mumbai Indians (MI), Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Punjab Kings (PBKS). He has also won an IPL title with SRH in 2016. He will now will be seen leading PBKS in IPL 2024 and will be looking to take the franchise to their maiden title.
6. Ravichandran Ashwin
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is among the players who were the part of IPL 2008 and will be seen playing in IPL 2024. Ashwin joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural season of IPL for ₹12 Lakhs. He was a part of CSK till 2015 and has been a part of two title winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. After that, Ashwin went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). He is set to play his third consecutive season for RR in IPL 2024.
7. Manish Pandey
Another young Indian talent who caught everyone’s attention after India’s triumph in the 2008 U-19 World Cup. Manish Pandey has been part of the IPL since 2008 after he was picked by Mumbai Indians for ₹6 Lakhs ahead of the inaugural season. After that, he went on to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Pune Warriors India, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals in his IPL career throughout the years. Pandey is the first Indian to score a century in the cash-rich league after he scored an unbeaten 114 runs against Deccan Chargers while playing for RCB in IPL 2009 fixture in Centurion. He was also the part of KKR’s title in 2014 where he was adjudged Players of the match for his match-winning knock of 94 runs in the final against Kings XI Punjab in Bengaluru. Now Pandey is to play for KKR again in his 17th consecutive season in the IPL 2024.
8. Ishant Sharma
Veteran Indian fast bowler Ishant Sharma is another player who will be playing his consecutive 17th season of the IPL in 2024. He made his IPL debut in 2008 for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after the franchise acquired his services for ₹3.80 crore in the auction. After that, he went on to play for Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC). He been retained by DC again ahead of IPL 2024 and will play as the senior spearhead pacer for the team in the upcoming season.
9. Ajinkya Rahane
Ajinkya Rahane is also among the most experienced players in the IPL who were part of its inaugural season in 2008, and will be seen in the upcoming edition again in 2024. He made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2008. After a couple of editions, Rahane joined Rajasthan Royals (RR) and has also captained the side on multiple occasions. Apart from these, he has played for Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals (DC). Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He has been retained by CSK for IPL 2024 and a memorable season in IPL 2023 where he amassed 326 runs from 14 matches at an average of 32.60 and a staggering strike rate of 172.49, and also won his first IPL title as a player.
10. Piyush Chawla
Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla has been a part of the IPL since 2008 and is still going strong in the cash-rich league. He made his IPL debut in 2008 for Kings XI Punjab (now known as Punjab Kings). After six years with Punjab, Chawla joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2014 and went on to win his first IPL title as a player and hit the winning runs for KKR in the dramatic final against Punjab in Bengaluru. He also played six years for KKR and went on to join Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2020. However, he didn’t have a memorable outing in that season and was picked by Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2021. Chawla had his best ever IPL season where he finished with 22 wickets from 16 matches for MI at an average of 22.50 and an economy rate of 8.11, and is set to play again in IPL 2024.
