The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) emerged in 2016 as a response to Chennai Super Kings’ suspension from the IPL, aiming to fill the gap left by the absence of high-profile cricket in Chennai. The league’s inaugural edition was inaugurated by MS Dhoni on 16 August 2016 in Chennai. The first edition of the tournament features eminent cricketers from the cricket world like Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik, and Lakshmipathy Balaji, with coaching support from Robin Singh and Michael Bevan, and Matthew Hayden serving as its brand ambassador.
Initially in the beginning of the season players from other states were not allowed to play but then the rules were made elastic allowing the players to participate and showcase their talent.
