The World Test Championship has brought back the interest of the game to this dying format. This concept was introduced in 2019, where all top test-playing nations compete for a two-year cycle and the top two teams with the best win percentage face each other in the final. New Zealand won the WTC 2019-21, and Australia won the second edition in 2021-23.
Earlier, we used to see a lot of draws, but now teams are pushing hard to get the result out of the match. That’s where some captains have played very smartly. They have used the conditions and their players so well to put the opposition under pressure.
This list is also about those captains who have been superb in their decision-making and tactics, which has helped them to win. In this article, we will talk about the top five captains who have won most matches in the history of the World Test Championship. There are only five captains so far with 10 or more wins.

5. Joe Root -12 wins
England have not made it to the final of the World Test Championship in the first three editions, but they have played most matches since the start of the WTC. Joe Root is the most capped WTC captain, having led England from 2019 and 2022.
He led England in 32 games, but his record was not as he would have expected. England won 12 matches under him and lost 13 with seven ending in draws. His win percentage was 37.50.
4. Rohit Sharma – 12 wins
Rohit Sharma registered an unwanted record when New Zealand beat India 3-0 most recently. He became the first Indian captain to suffer a bilateral home test series whitewash in history. But a bad series can’t decide how good he has been. Rohit took over the responsbility after Virat Kohli stepped down in 2022.
Since then, he has led India in 21 matches and won 12 of those. India have lost seven games under him, and he has a win percent of 57.14 in the World Test Championship. Under him, India beat Australia and England at home.
3. Virat Kohli – 14 wins
We might not see another leader like Virat Kohli, who loved to be on the face of the opposition, which was the real mantra for his success as captain in Test. Under his leadership, India finished at the top of the test rankings for five consecutive years between 2017 and 2021. India were ranked 7th in the test when he took the captaincy in 2015, and they became No. 1 for a long period.
Virat has most test wins as an Asian captain and fourth-most overall. In the World Test Championship, he led India in 22 games and won 14, lost 7, and one was drawn. He led India to the finals of the first two WTC championships.
2. Ben Stokes – 15 wins
Ben Stokes is one of the most exciting test captains in modern-day cricket. Since he took charge of the English test team, it has changed totally. England have changed their approach, and their mindset is to go for the win. That has worked pretty well for them.
Stokes became the captain after Root stepped down in 2020. Under Stokes, England have played 26 matches so far. They have won 15 games and lost 10, while one has been drawn. As a WTC captain, Stokes has a win percentage of 57.69.
1. Pat Cummins – 17 wins
Pat Cummins has been superb in his captaincy, and in his first 6-7 months, he took Australia to lift the ODI World Cup and World Test Championship titles. He has been phenominal and led a star-studded Australian side to all challenges.
Under Cummins, Australia have played 28 games and won 17 of them. They have lost only six games, while five have been drawn. Cummins has a win percentage of 60.71 as captain in the World Test Championship, which is one of the best.
