We are now in the last stage of the league match in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup in India. After that, the knockout stage will kickstart with the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India, South Africa and Australia have already confirmed their berth in the semis, but there is one more slot left. Looking at the points table, it is clear that the five-time champions Australia will take on South Africa in the second semi-final at Eden Gardens on 16th November. On the other hand, the table toppers India will play the first semi-final against the fourth-positioned team in Mumbai on the 15th of November.
As India are likely to play the semi-final at Wankhede, the fans will be expecting big performances from big players. Throughout the tournament, the Indian batting line-up has been carried by the two senior players, including the skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. On the other hand, batsmen like Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also stood out on a few occasions when other players failed to make an impact.
India’s opening batter Shubman Gill didn’t have a great start to the as he was diagnosed with the dengue and went on to miss the first two games against Australia and Afghanistan. After that, he played six matches in the tournament so far amassing 219 runs at an average of 36.50 including two-half centuries. Although Gill haven’t performed well in most of the game in this World Cup, he will be a pivotal player for India in the knockout stage and the fans would have high expectations from him in the semis.
Gill had a great outing with the bat in ODIs in the year 2023 with 1449 runs from 26 matches at an average of 63.00 along with seven half-centuries and five centuries including one double hundred. Adding cherry on the top, he recently became the World No.1 ODI batter in ICC rankings dethroning Pakistan’s Babar Azam after 951 days. Now the 24-year-old will eye another big knock in the semi-final at Wankhede after missing his century by just 8 runs on the same ground in the India vs Sri Lanka clash in this World Cup on 2nd November.
