Ricky Ponting took over the captaincy after the great Steve Waugh and took Australia to new heights. In 2022, he made his debut as Australian captain in the 50-over format. A few months later, he became the test captain in 2003. After Clive Lloyd, he was only the second captain to lead a country to two successive ODI World Cups. After Steve Waugh, the full-time captaincy was given to Ricky Ponting, who was scoring runs consistently for Australia. He became the 42nd player to lead the Australian team in the test format. Under Ponting, Australia played 27 bilateral test series, including one-match series against World XI.

Australia lost only seven, and one was drawn; the rest Australia won the 19 series under him between 2003 and 2012. He led them in 77 tests overall, and Australia won 48 of those games and lost only 16. As a test captaincy, Ponting scored 6542 runs at an average of 51.51 with 20 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

He has scored 8497 runs at an average of 42.91 with 22 centuries and 51 half-centuries.

Ricky Ponting was the first player to lead Australia in the shortest format. He led them to the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 as well, where they finished in the semifinal. Under Ponting, Australia played 17 T20Is and won 7 of them and lost 10 matches with a win percent of 41.17. As captain, Ponting scored 401 runs at an average of 28.64.
