Big Bash League (BBL) is one of the most followed T20 tournaments globally. It is the premier franchise tournament for Australia, which is run and supervised by Australian cricket. Unlike other T20 tournaments around the world, the BBL is played under the same pattern from start to recent season.
The first season saw 8 teams, and those teams are continuing. The inaugural BBL season took place in 2011-12; since then, it has been played once every year. There have been 13 successful seasons of this league and many more to come.
Out of 8 teams, six franchises have had the glory of lifting the BBL title. Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes are two unlucky sides who have not won the title yet. There are three teams that have won the title multiple times. Below, we will talk about the most successful sides in BBL history that have won the most titles.
Most Successful Teams in the Big Bash League (BBL)
No. | Teams | No. of Titles | Seasons |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Perth Scorchers | 5 | 2013–14, 2014–15, 2016–17, 2021–22, 2022–23 |
2 | Sydney Sixers | 3 | 2011–12, 2019–20, 2020–21 |
3 | Brisbane Heat | 2 | 2012–13, 2023–24 |
4 | Melbourne Renegades | 1 | 2018–19 |
5 | Adelaide Strikers | 1 | 2017–18 |
6 | Sydney Thunder | 1 | 2015–16 |
6. Melbourne Renegades – 1 Title

Melbourne Renegades achieved success during the 8th edition in 2018-19. Aaron Finch led them to lift the trophy. That was the first and only time that the Renegades made it to the final of the BBL. In 13 seasons, they have made it to the top four in four seasons, and in the 2018-19 season, they went on to win the title. They beat Melbourne Stars in the final by 13 runs to lift the title.
5. Adelaide Strikers – 1 Title

Adelaide Strikers have also won the BBL title once. That win came in 2017/18 when Travis Head led them to lift the trophy. That was the only time they made it to a BBL final and won it. The Strikers beat Hobart Hurricanes in the final as Jake Weatherald slammed a century for the Strikers. Apart from that win, Adelaide Strikers have made it to the semifinal or playoffs six times but have not gone past that.
4. Sydney Thunder – 1 Title

Sydney Thunder had a below-par BBL history. But they have won the title once in 2015-16, which came under the captaincy of Mike Hussey. The Thunder beat Melbourne Stars in the final by 3 wickets to win their maiden title.
Secondly, they have an unwanted record of finishing a BBL season at the bottommost of the time. They have finished at the bottom in five seasons. Apart from that win, Sydney Thunder have also made it to the top four in four seasons.
3. Brisbane Heat – 2 Titles

Brisbane Heat were only the second team to win the BBL title. That title win came under Chris Hartley as the Heat won the final, beating Perth Scorchers by 34 runs. After that win, the Heat made it to the BBL final in 2022-23, but they lost it against Perth Scorchers.
However, Brisbane Heat carried that form into the next season and went on to win the 13th edition in 2023-24. Colin Munro and Nathan McSweeney led the team to their second title win as they beat Sydney Sixers in the final.
2. Sydney Sixers – 3 Titles

Sydney Sixers are the second-best team in the BBL’s history. They have won a total of three titles. But they have been unlucky as they have also lost the BBL final four times. They won the inaugural season of the tournament, beating Perth Scorchers.
Then, the Sixers had to wait for 8 seasons to win their second title. They won the 2019-20 edition, beating Melbourne Stars in the final. In the very next season, the Sixers defended their title successfully. Steve Smith led them to the first title while the next two came under Moises Henriques.
1. Perth Scorchers – 5 Titles

Perth Scorchers are the only BBL team to defend their title successfully on two occasions. They won their first BBL trophy under Simon Katich in 2013-14; they won the next season when Adam Voges took on the responsibility. Voges led them to their third title as well in 2017, beating Sydney Sixers in the final.
After that, Perth Scorchers won back-to-back seasons in 2022 and 2023. Both title wins came under the captaincy of Ashton Turner. Interestingly, apart from winning five titles, Perth Scorchers also ended as runners-up in three seasons, in 2011, 2012, and 2021, respectively.
