The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest cricket league in the world and has an immense fan base. Since its inception in 2008, the tournament has produced some nail-biting matches in the last 16 seasons that brought the spectators at the edge of their seats. Now, IPL is coming to enthrall the fans with its 17th season in 2024 that is set to kickstart with an opening match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 22nd March.
Watching an IPL match is always a thrilling experience, where sometimes you are not even aware till the last moment at which side the match is going. Sometimes, the players give their best till the very end but still end up on the losing side, while on some occasions, the players who were having a good outing in the most of the match, clutched at the very last moment and won a thriller for their team from the jaws of defeat.
Sometimes, the match becomes so intense that the result cannot be decided even if both team played their 20 overs. In that condition, the Super Over takes place and the team scoring more runs in that extra over will be declared as the winner.
What is a Super Over?
The Super Over is a One-Eliminator that takes place in case of a tied-match. If both teams end putting up a same total in their allotted overs, the match will be continued in the super over. Notably, the team batting second in the main match will be batting first in the Super Over. A team can play only three batters and one bowler in a Super Over. If a team loses two wickets before given six balls, it will be declared all-out in the Super Over as there are only three batters.
The first-ever Super Over in history took place in a T20I match between West Indies and New Zealand at Auckland on 26th December, 2008.
Sometimes, the match is so intense that even a Super Over can end in a tie. Earlier, in case of a tied Super Over, the team scoring most fours was declared as a winner. However, things changed after the 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand at Lords, where England were declared as Champions in terms of boundary count.
After that, the fans were claiming it was unfair and demanded two Super Overs. The first double Super Over took place in a IPL 2020 match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in Dubai on 18th October.. The match and even the first Super Over was tied and the winner was decided in the second Super Over.
According to the rules, if the Super Over is also tied, the second Super will take place and the process will go on until we get the result. However, it should be done in an allotted time for the match.
Rules of Super Over in the IPL
- The start of the Super Over should be within 10 minutes of the end of the game.
- The team that was chasing the target will get the chance to bat first in the Super Over.
- The position of both on-field umpires will be the same as it was during the final over of the game.
- No other pitch will be used to play in the Super Over; the similar pitch that was used during the game will be used.
- The team that bowls second in the game has the right to choose the end from their bowler and will bowl the Super Over.
- Both teams will choose three batters to bat and one bowler to bowl in the Super Over.
- There is no count for Super Over; it will continue until the result comes out.
- However, according to a change in the IPL rule for Super Over, there is a certain amount of time from the start of the first Super Over to decide the winner. The match official will confirm the time for both teams (one hour maximum) for what could be the last super over.
- If despite multiple Super Overs get tied in a given time, then once the time is over, the match will end in a tie and both teams will share a point each.
