Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Shreyas Iyer has been in the limelight for the last few days because of many reasons. The 29-year-old was recently removed from the BCCI Central Contract for the 2023-24 season for refusing to play in domestic cricket despite getting several warnings from the board. Iyer complained of back injury when was asked to play in Ranji Trophy, while the BCCI Medical team declared him fit to play.
Now, it seems like the back injury has flared up again for Iyer while he was batting for Mumbai in the recently ended Ranji Trophy final match against Vidarbha at Wankhede Stadium. The right-hander sustained an injury during his 95-run knock for Mumbai in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy final. As per the BCCI source, Iyer felt discomfort due to which, he didn’t take the field on Day 5.
With the injury flaring a few days ahead of the IPL 2024, Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the initial matches of the tournament for Kolkata Knight Riders. Notably, the KKR skipper missed the entire season of IPL 2023 due to back injury issues and underwent surgery.
“It is not looking good. It is the same back injury which has got aggravated. It is unlikely he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,”
the BCCI source was quoted as saying by OneCricket.
Shreyas Iyer was one of the top performers for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He solved the middle-order for the Men in Blue in the mega event at home and amassed 530 runs from 11 matches at an average of 66.25 with a century in the semi-final against New Zealand. Iyer was last seen playing for India in the second Test of the five-match series with England at Vizag before he complained of back injury. The 29-year-old was then asked by the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) to participate in the Ranji Trophy matches if he wants to make a comeback in the National side.
However, Iyer complained of back injury again but was declared fit to play by the BCCI Medical team. At last, the board punished him along with Ishan Kishan by terminating their Central Contracts for 2023-24
