5. Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad made their IPL debut in 2013 and made it to the playoffs in their maiden season, but lost their first ever knockout game. But then in 2016, they made the playoffs again under David Warner and script history. SRH won the eliminator, qualifier, and final in that season. Overall, SRH has played 11 knockout matches and won five of them. David Warner has been their most successful player, along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been part of all these five wins.
4. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have played equal numbers of IPL finals as Kolkata Knight Riders. But RCB have not won anything, while KKR have won two. That’s the difference. RCB usually choke in knockout games. Since 2008, RCB have played 14 knockout games and won only five, for a win ratio of 0.555. Virat Kohli has been part of all those matches.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders won the 2012 and 2014 editions under Gautam Gambhir. The third time they made it to the final was in 2021 under Eoin Morgan, but they lost against Chennai Super Kings. KKR have been a consistent team, but their record in knockout games is also pretty average. Overall, KKR has played 13 knockout games until now and won eight of them in total. Sunil Narine, Gautam Gambhir, and Andre Russell have been part of most knockout matches for KKR in the IPL.
2. Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians have won five IPL titles, and you can’t win so many championships without doing well in knockout games. MI made it to the playoffs in ten seasons. They have played a total of 20 matches. MI have won 13 of those, including five wins in the IPL finals, and these are the second best numbers by any team. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard have been part of all these wins. In fact, Pollard holds the record for the joint-most Man of the Match awards in IPL playoffs.
1. Chennai Super Kings
Without a doubt, Chennai Super Kings are the most successful IPL teams. They have five titles under their belt. Since 2008, CSK have failed to make it into the playoffs in only three seasons. They have played in 10 IPL finals, which is a record in itself. And it can only be possible if you do well in big games. CSK have played 26 IPL knockout matches and won 17 of them. MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja are part of most of the IPL knockout wins for CSK. Raina has three MOTM awards.
