Kolkata Knight Riders have been part of the Indian Premier League since 2008. They are based in Kolkata and owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla, and her spouse Jay Mehta. KKR are one of the three teams that have won the IPL title multiple times.
This team has played a total of three IPL finals and qualified for the playoffs 8 times, including the IPL 2024. 1. 2011- Fourth Place
In 2011, KKR made their first playoff appearance, which came under Gautam Gambhir. They finished fourth on the table with 8 wins. As a result, they faced Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator. But they finished on the wrong side and lost that game by 4 wickets to finish the season in fourth place.
2. 2012 – Champions
Gambhir took KKR to the playoffs for the second time in 2012. They finished second on the table with 10 wins out of 16 matches. KKR played Qualifier 1 against the Delhi Capitals and won it by 18 runs to book a seat in the final. Later, they faced Chennai Super Kings in the finals and won it by five wickets to win their maiden title. Manvinder Bisla scored 89 off 48 runs in the finals, while chasing 191 and winning the Man of the Match award.
3. 2014 – Champions
After 2012, KKR couldn’t qualify for the playoffs in 2023, but they did it in 2014 under Gambhir again. With 18 points, KKR finished second on the table and faced Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1. Umesh Yadav bowled an esceptional spell of 3/13 and helped KKR win by 28 runs, and they made it to their second final. Then, they faced Punjab Kings again in the final. PBKS scored 199/4 in the first innings. Manish Pandey made 94 off 50, and KKR made 200/7 to win their second title. This is the highest-ever chase in an IPL final.
4. 2016 – Fourth Place
KKR made their fourth playoff appearance in 2016. Once again, it was Gautam Gambhir who was leading the team. They finished fourth in the group stage and qualified for Eliminator, where they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH made 162/8 in the first innings and KKR fell short by 22 runs and made 140/8. As a result, they were eliminated and finished the tournament in fourth place.
5. 2017 – Third Place
In 2017, Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to their fifth playoff appearance. They finished the group stage in fourth place after winning 8 out of 14 games. They faced Sunrisers Hyderabad in Eliminator and won it by 7 wickets which was a rain-hit game. Then, KKR faced Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Batting first, KKR were bowled out for just 107 runs, MI made 111/4 in 14.3 overs, and KKR finished in third place.
6. 2018 – Third Place
Dinesh Karthik was given the captaincy of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018, and he did well. KKR made it to the playoffs by finishing third in the group stage. They won 8 out of 14 games and advanced to Eliminator. KKR locked horns with Rajasthan Royals in that game and won it by 25 runs to make it through Qualifier 2. In that game, they faced Sunrisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens. However, KKR lost that game by 14 runs while chasing 175 and finished the tournament in third place.
7. 2021 – Runner up
In 2021, Eoin Morgan was the captain of the team when Kolkata Knight Riders played only their second IPL final. They finished fourth in the group stage with 14 points. Mumbai Indians also had 14 points, but KKR had a better NRR. Kolkata faced Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Eliminator at Sharjah Cricket Ground and won it by 4 wickets. Sunil Narine took 4/21 and won Man of the Match. In Qualifier 2, KKR beat Delhi Capitals by 3 wickets while chasing 136. Venkatesh Iyer made 55 off 41 and won Man of the Match. They faced Chennai Super Kings in the final and unfortunately lost it by 27 runs while chasing 193 and finished third on the table.
