After years of success, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is coming back with its 17th edition that will kickstart on 22nd March with a match between the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The IPL is as important for the franchises and its owners as it is for the players. The major decisions in the franchises are taken with the assurance of their owner.
It’s not an easy thing to become an owner of an IPL team, and it’s more than just winning a trophy. In IPL 2025, all 10 teams will have different owners while some teams also have more than one owner. There are many famous celebrities, actors and businesspersons who have acquired the ownership of different teams in the IPL.

1. Mumbai Indians – Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani

Starting with the Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful IPL teams is owned by Mukesh Ambani, the richest person in Asia and the owner of the Reliance Industries. The MI franchise basically comes under the Indiawin Sports Private Limited, which is a 100% subsidiary of the Reliance Industries. Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani and elder son Akash Ambani are the co owners of the franchise.
Both Nita and Akash actively take in all the operations and other functions of the team. Apart from the IPL, the Indiawin owns four other sister franchises of the MI in Women’s Premier League (MI Women), International League T20 (MI Emirates), Major League Cricket (MI New York), and South Africa T20 League (MI Cape Town). In the IPL, Mumbai Indians have won the title five times (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020) and have a brand value of $87 Million, i.e, around ₹720 Crore as of 2024
2. Chennai Super Kings – N. Srinivasan

The next in the list are Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most consistent and successful team in the IPL. The franchise is owned by Narayanaswami Srinivasan, who is the former BCCI President, and the Managing Director at India Cements. The India Cements are in the ownership of CSK through its sister company named Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.
The Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited is a non-governmental organization that was founder under India Cements in December 2014. Srinivasan is key decision maker in the CSK franchise and takes part in all the operations and functions related to the team. CSK also have their sister franchises named Joburg Super Kings in South African T20 League, and the Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket USA. CSK are five-time IPL champions having won the title in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023, and have brand value of $81 Million i.e, approx ₹670 Crore as of 2024.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders – Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla

One of the most popular franchises in the tournament, the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), have an immense fan base and consist of star players from different nations. Apart from that, one of the major reasons for KKR’s popularity is the bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, who is the co-owner of the franchise, through his Production company named Red Chillies Entertainment. The Red Chillies Entertainment have 55% stakes in the franchise, while the remaining 45% are owned by the Mehta Groups headed by the Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta.
KKR also have a sister franchise named Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. The Kolkata based franchise have won the IPL title in 2012 and 2014 respectively and have a brand value of $78.6 Million i,e. Around ₹650 Crore as of 2024.
4. Royal Challengers Bangalore – Prathmesh Mishra

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are one of the most loved IPL franchises and have a huge fanbase. However, they haven’t been able to get their hands on the IPL trophy in the last 16 years despite having star players in their squad over the years. The RCB franchise is owned by Prathmesh Mishra of the United Spirits Limited (USL). Mishra took over the role of the RCB chairman from Anand Kripalu in July 2021 and has been involved in the major operations and functions of the franchise since then.
The USL also owns a RCB franchise in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) that was inaugurated in 2023. RCB have finished as the runners-up in IPL three times in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Despite not winning the cup till now, RCB are one of the most valuable franchises in the IPL with a brand value of $69.8 i,e. Around ₹577 Crore as of 2024.
5. Rajasthan Royals – Manoj Badale and Lachlan Murdoch

Rajasthan Royals (RR) will always be known as the first-ever champions of the IPL, as they clinched the trophy in the inaugural season in 2008. However, RR haven’t been able to repeat the triumph and qualified for the final once in 2022. The franchise is currently owned by Manoj Badle (Emerging Media Pvt Ltd), Lachlan Murdoch (Fox Media), and Gerry Cardinale (RedBird Capital Partners). The Emerging Media IPL ltd, owned by Badale is a major stake holder in RR with 65% share. On the other hand, Red Bird Capitals, a New York enterprise owned by Cardinale have 15% stakes in the franchise. However, the share of Fox Media hasn’t been disclosed yet.
The RR owners also own its sister franchises in the Caribbean Premier League (Barbados Royals) and South Africa T20 League (Paarl Royals). The franchise has brand value of $62.5 Million i,e. ₹517 Crore as of 2024.
6. Sunrisers Hyderabad – Kalanithi Maran

One-time IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are owned by Kalanithi Maran, who is the Chairman of the Sun TV Network. Kalanitihi’s daughter Kavya Maran is the co-owner of SRH and is actively involved in all the operations and the functions of the franchise since 2020.
After making their IPL debut in 2013, SRH emerged as champions for the first time in 2016. Kavya Maran also owns the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, a sister franchise of the SRH in the South African T20 League. SRH have brand value of $48.2 million i,e. Around 400 crore as in 2024.
7. Gujarat Titans – Siddharth Patel

Gujarat TItans emerged as the IPL champions in their first attempt after making their debut in the cash-rich league in 2022. The British private equity and investment advisory firm CVC Capital Partners owned by Siddharth Patel, acquired the ownership rights of the franchise for a whopping ₹5625 crore in October 2021.
GT are the champions of IPL 2022 and the runners-up of IPL 2023 with a brans value of $65.4 Million, i,e. Around ₹541 Crore as in 2024.
8. Delhi Capitals – Kiran Kumar Grandhi and Parth Jindal

Delhi Capitals (DC) are one of the few teams who still haven’t got their hands on despite being part of the tournament since 2008. Talking about its ownership, the franchise is owned by Kiran Kumar Grandhi of GMR Groups and Parth Jindal of JSW Group. Both the enterprises have a equal share of stakes in the franchise.
DC also have their sister franchises like Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 and Pretoria in South African T20 League. Apart from this, DC also have team in the Women’s Premier League from 2023.
Parth Jindal, who is the director of JSW, runs all the operations and functions of the franchise, Kiran Kumar, the CEO and MD of GMR Group. Delhi Capitals have a brand value of $64.1 million i,e. around ₹530 Crore as of 2024.
9. Punjab Kings – Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul

Punjab Kings are among the eight teams who were in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008. However, they haven’t been able to win an IPL title from the last 16 years and have qualified for the final just once in 2014, where they lost to KKR. The franchise is owned by four different business enterprises like Dabur by Mohit Burman, Wadia Group by Ness Wadia, PZNZ Media by Preity Zinta and Apeejay Surrendra Group Karan Paul. Burman is a major stakeholder in the franchise with 46% shares followed by Preity Zinta and Wadia who have a equal share of 23%, while Paul owns 8% stakes of the franchise.
Punjab Kings also have a sister franchise named Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League in the West Indies. As in 2024, PBKS have a brand value of $45.3 Million i,e. around ₹374 Crore.
10. Lucknow SuperGiants – Sanjiv Goenka

Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) is one of the two franchises that made theri IPL debut in 2022. The franchise is owned by Sanjiv Goenka, who is the founder of RPSG Group. Goenka previously owned Rising Pune Supergiants that was a part of the IPL in 2016-17.
The owner of LSG also owns Durban Supergiants in the South Africa T20 League. The franchise has a brand value of $47 Million i,e. around ₹389 Crore as in 2024.
