IPL 2025 Mega Auction: The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) will have the mega auction, and we are just a few weeks away from the biggest event in franchise cricket history. This will be the IPL 2025 mega auction, which is all set to be held in November 2024. The mega auction has always changed the outcome of all the teams, and something similar is expected from the upcoming event.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set a deadline for all ten franchises to submit the retention list by 5 p.m. on October 31. Every fan is eagerly waiting for the final list of players to be retained by all ten teams. A team can only retain a maximum of six players through direct retentions or the Right to Match (RTM card), which has made its return since the mega auction held in 2018.
Most of the teams will look to retain their core group of players, but the new rules and regulations announced by the IPL Governing Council for the next 2025–27 cycle might have changed the game. All teams will be allowed to retain five capped players, and one uncapped retention is a must, while the maximum limit of retention is six. Let’s talk about the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction in detail.
IPL 2025 Retention Rules & Guidelines
According to the new guidelines released by the IPL Governing Council, a maximum of six players will be retained by a franchise ahead of the mega auction. These retentions can be done directly or indirectly by using the RTM card.
The last time the rule of RTM card was used in the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to the new rule, a team can retain five capped players and two uncapped players, which will give good options to the new players.
IPL 2025 Retention Price Slab
The 18th edition has come with increased purse value for all ten franchises. Earlier it was INR 95 crore, which has increased to INR 120 crore for the IPL 2025 mega auction. The more money means we might have some big signings. Below you can see the price slab according to the retention.
- First-Choice Three Retentions: INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore
- Two More Retentions: INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore
- Price Slab for Uncapped Player: INR 4 Crore
Out of INR 120 crore purse value, if a franchise wants to retain five players, they will have to spend INR 75 crore on five retentions. Adding to that, retaining an uncapped player will cost INR 4 crore extra. It means six retentions will cost a franchise INR 79 crore, and they will be left with INR 41 crore to build their teams and sign other players.
Meanwhile, some reports confirm that all franchises will have a flexible option to use their retention amount. The maximum amount for retention is INR 18 crore, but let’s suppose a team retains a player at a price of INR 25 crore, so they will have INR 50 crore to retain the next four, which they can do at their own choice. However, if in case the amount of retaining five players goes over INR 75 crore, the extra amount will be deducted from the remaining purse value.
IPL 2025 Retention Deadline
According to the BCCI, the final deadline to release the list of retained and released players is at 5 p.m. on October 31 (Thursday). Teams can submit it before that as well, but not after the deadline is over.
