IPL 2025: The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to begin on March 22. This is expected to be another exciting season of the world’s biggest cricket league. But as the start of the season is approaching, some of the players have decided to pull out from the season for various reasons.
It is not new in the IPL as every season, some injuries force players to withdraw from the season. Similarly, this season we have seen some replacements. KKR has signed Chetan Sakariya for injured Umran Malik while SRH has acquired South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder for Brydon Carse. The five-time champion Mumbai Indians have also made two replacements.
MI had to face blows as Allah Ghazanfar and Lizaad Williams were ruled out but they signed Mujeeb ur Rahman and Corbin Bosch as their replacements. Though the signing of Corbin Bosch has raised a new controversy as he withdrew from Pakistan Super League to feature in the IPL 2025. Here we will talk all about the replacement rule, changes made by the BCCI, and how it works.
IPL 2025: How Player Replacement Rule Work & Changes
With the 18th edition all set to stage, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a notable change in the “Replacement Rule.” It is never easy to plan as a franchise the ideal replacement. All teams make plans and pick the players accordingly at an IPL auction. But an injury forces them to find an alternate way.
That is where the replacement rule is always important. Hence, the BCCI has expanded the duration of the replacement rule. The duration has increased to 12 group matches from the 7th group game. That means, a team who needs a replacement, will have a chance to wait until their 12th match in the group stage. THat gives them enough time to search and pick an ideal replacement. Notably, one team has 14 group matches.
IPL 2025: Where teams can get replacements from?
According to the rule, if a player gets injured then the franchise can sign another player as the replacement. But the player signed as a replacement should be from Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP). RAPP players are those players who registered themselves from the auction and went unsold.
IPL 2025: Rule to sign replacement midway of the season
There are two different scenarios for signing a replacement. One is pre-season while the other is mid-season. In case, a player gets injured in the middle of the season, the franchise still has a chance for replacement.
In case of player gets injured mid-season, the injury or illness should be confirmed by a BCCI doctor or medical panel. The rule will only be considered before the 12th league game of the team. However, if the player gets replaced in mid-season, he can’t come back to play, even if gets fully recovered before the 12th league game.
IPL 2025: Can a player be signed for one match only?
It is not in the rule to sign a player for only one game. But there is an option as well. In case a team has only one wicket-keeper in the squad, who gets ruled out, and the team is left with no choices. Then, the franchise can sign another keeper as a replacement, but he should be an Indian player, unless they already have 8 overseas players on the team.
IPL 2025: Procedure to sign a replacement
Unless the injury or illness is not confirmed by a BCCI doctor or medical team, there will not be any replacement. But once it is confirmed, the franchise will have to submit medical or other required documents for approval to the BCCI. That is how the replacement procedure will begin.
IPL 2025: What is the salary cap of a replacement?
Though there is no limit to buying a player at an IPL auction, when it is about replacement, there is a limitation. The franchise can only sign the player for his base price, which was fixed when he entered at the IPL auction.
IPL 2025 Replacement Controversy
However, it is not a new thing in the IPL, as the franchise signed a player-for replacement. But ahead of the IPL 2025, a controversy sparked which gathered the attention of the whole world. Lizaad Williams has to be ruled out of the IPL 2025 due to injury, and Mumbai Indians signed South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch as a replacement.
The all-rounder was already confirmed to play in the PSL 2025. But as he was picked up by the MI, he withdrew from the PSL 2025. As a result, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a notice to the all-rounder, citing breach of the PSL contract.
Notably, for the first time ever, the PSL 2025 will be played simultaneously along with the IPL 2025. Bosch was signed by Peshawar Zalmi in the Diamond Category for the coming PSL season, starting on January 13. In the legal notice, the PCB has demanded the all-rounder justify his reason or action from the contractual commitments within the time duration.
