Sri Lanka were one of the dominating teams in World cricket once. But in the past few years, there has been a decline in Sri Lanka cricket after the retirement of some big names like Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, etc. The 1996 World Cup champions, and the runners-up in 2007 and 2011, had to play qualifiers to feature in the upcoming tournament in India.
