India are all set to host the upcoming ODI World Cup after 12 years. The last time India hosted the tournament was in 2011 and they emerged as World Champions for the second time after 28 years. Now as the tournament comes back to India again, the fans will be hoping that the Indian team repeat the glory once again and clinch the title for the third time. The tournament will kickstart on October 5th with an opening match between England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The hosts, India will begin their 2023 World Cup campaign on 8th October against Australia at the M.A. Chidambaram in Chennai. After that, India will take on Afghanistan on 11th October at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This will be only the second time when India will face Afghanistan in an ODI World Cup match. The last time they met in ODI format was during the 2019 World Cup, where India won the game by 11 runs. Now both teams will meet again in the mega event and Afghanistan will be looking turn the tables against India this time.

Both India and Afghanistan have faced each other three times in ODI, where India come out victorious on two occasions, while one game ended in a tie. Although, Afghanistan are yet to win a game against India, but still they made India fight hard for the win on a few occasions. Their first encounter took place during the 2014 Asia Cup, and it was an easy win for India as they defeated Afghanistan by 8 wickets. While in their next meeting during the 2018 Asia Cup, India got start against Afghanistan while chasing a target of 253 runs, but couldn’t go down the line as the Afghanistan bowlers made a remarkable comeback as they bowled India out for 252 runs and the match was tied. While in the 2019 World Cup, Afghanistan again troubled India as they restricted them for 224 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, and gave a tough fight while chasing a target. However, it was Mohammed Shami who finished the game for India with a hat trick in the final over of the match.

Talking about the shortest format of the game, India and Afghanistan have faced each other in four T20Is and India come out victorious on all four occasions. While Afghanistan are yet to win a T20I against Men in Blue. Out of these four T20Is, three matches have been played in the T20 World Cup. Their first encounter took place during the 2010 T20 World Cup in West Indies, where India registered a comfortable win by 7 wickets. While India and Afghanistan last met during the 2022 Asia Cup in UAE, where Indian batter Virat Kohli ended his three-year century drought and laid the foundation for a massive victory by 101 runs.

Notably, India and Afghanistan have played only one Test match against each other. Iit was a game that gave Afghanistan the status of a Test playing nation, as they made their international debut in red ball cricket. The Test match was played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in June 2018, and it was an easy win for India as they defeated Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs. Since then, India and Afghanistan haven’t faced each other in the longest format of the game.
