Pakistan’s Champions Trophy campaign started on a tough note as Fakhar Zaman picked up an injury in the very first over of their opening match against New Zealand in Karachi.
The incident happened on the third ball of Shaheen Afridi’s over when New Zealand’s Will Young drove the ball through covers. Fakhar sprinted towards the boundary to stop it, but while diving, he landed awkwardly and looked in discomfort. He immediately signaled for help and walked off the field, holding his lower back. Kamran Ghulam came in as a substitute fielder.
A Familiar Injury Worry for Pakistan
This injury comes as a fresh blow for Pakistan, who already lost Saim Ayub in a similar incident before the tournament. During a Test match against South Africa, Ayub injured his ankle while chasing a ball to the boundary. The injury turned out to be a fracture, ruling him out of the Champions Trophy 2025.
Interestingly, Fakhar Zaman was not in Pakistan’s original ODI plans but made a comeback as Ayub’s replacement. He had performed well on return, scoring 84 off 59 balls and 41 off 25 in his first two matches back.
Will Fakhar Return to Play?
For now, the extent of Fakhar’s injury remains unknown. Pakistan will hope it is not serious, as his experience is crucial in their Champions Trophy campaign. More updates on his condition are expected soon.
