ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is announced to be back by ICC in the year 2021 after 8 years of cancelation. Champions Trophy, previously known as the ICC Knockout Tournament is also popular as the “Mini World Cup” among cricket aficionados.
The ICC Champions Trophy is one of the prominent tournaments for the top-ranked eight teams in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. Originally ICC started the Champions Trophy as a Knockout Tournament to raise funds for the non-Test playing countries in 1998. However, the growing popularity of the Champions Trophy helped to spread its branches all over the globe. Over the years Champions Trophy has been hosted by different countries like India, England, South Africa, and more.
This will be the 9th edition of the Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted by Pakistan from February to 19 March. In the last edition, Pakistan outmuscled India in the Champions Trophy Final at Lords and claimed their only Champions Trophy in 2017.

1. Champions Trophy 1998 winner – South Africa
South Africa was the inaugural season winner of the ICC Champions Trophy back then known as the Knockout Tournament 1998. South Africa defeated West Indies and won by 4 wickets at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Bangladesh. In the history of South Africa playing ICC events, it is the only tournament where the Proteas knocked out the final game and won a trophy.
2. Champions Trophy 2000 winner – New Zealand
Next, New Zealand became the winner of the 2000 Champions Trophy by beating India in the final and won by 4 wickets at Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi, Kenya. India posted 264 for 6 wickets including captain Sourav Ganguly’s stunning knock of 117 runs. However, Kiwi middle batter Chris Cairns turned the game upside down and with a winning ton handed the Champions Trophy 2000 to his side of the team.
3. Champions Trophy 2002 winner – India and Sri Lanka
In 2002, Sri Lanka and India faced each other in the Champions Trophy Final game at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. However, rain interrupted the game which led to the joint winner Sri Lanka and India of the Champions Trophy, in 2002.
4. Champions Trophy 2004 winner – West Indies
West Indies defeated England in their home London winning the final game by 2 wickets and secured their maiden Champions Trophy in 2004. Despite a marvelous inning of Marcus Trescothick hitting a ton England scored a 217 run. In response West Indies batter successfully hunted down the target and won by 2 wickets with 7 balls left.
5. Champions Trophy 2006 & 2009 winner – Australia
Australia has registered the rare feat of bagging the Champions Trophy consecutively in 2006 and 2009. In 2006, for the first time, India hosted the Champions Trophy, and two finalists Australia and West Indies played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. In a rain-curtailed match, Australia defeated the West Indies by 8 wickets all thanks to the amazing knocks of Shane Watson and Damien Martyn. The next edition of the 2009 Champions Trophy was held in South Africa. This time Aussies crushed the Kiwis in the final game and won by 6 wickets at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
6. Champions Trophy 2013 winner – India
India is the only country after Australia, winning the Champions Trophy twice. India became a second-time winner of the Champions Trophy in 2013. Team Blue defeated host England at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, and clinched the 2nd Champions Trophy of 2013.
7. Champions Trophy 2017 winner – Pakistan
Last but not least Pakistan became the current winner of the Champions Trophy crushed their arch-rivals India in the Final game at Lords and became a 2017 Champions Trophy winner. Runner-up India failed to chase 338 scoring only 158 runs and was heavily beaten by 180 runs losing the Champions Trophy at the hands of Pakistan.
