Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya is all set to lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. He will be replacing Rohit Sharma, who led MI to the title five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, Pandya was also the part of four out of five title campaigns and also led Gujarat Titans to the in their maiden IPL season in 2022.
Hardik Pandya has been an prolific all-rounder for India over the years, who could turn the match around with his power-hitting by coming in the middle-order and take crucial wickets as an right-arm medium pacer. Apart from that, Pandya has also impressed everyone with his leadership skills in the last couple of years in the IPL and for the Indian team.

However, he has been out of action since October 2023 after sustaining an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup in India. Along with this, the return of Rohit Sharma in the T20I squad for the series against Afghanistan also makes him doubtful to lead India in the T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA in June 2024. Hardik Pandya as Captain across formats
Hardik Pandya was first appointed as the captain of Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of IPL 2022, when the franchise made its debut in the cash-rich league. Under Pandya’s leadership along with the guidance of Head Coach Ashish Nehra, GT dominated the whole season by standing at the top of the points table with 10 wins from 14 matches in the league and ended up becoming the IPL champions in their maiden season. With this, Pandya became the first captain after Shane Warne to lead his IPL team to the title in the very first season. GT continued their dominance in IPL 2023 and qualified for their second consecutive IPL final in that season. However they lost to Chennai Super Kings in the title clash in Ahmedabad.
Pandya made his captaincy debut for the Indian team in the T20I series against Ireland in June 2022 where India emerged victorious by 2-0. He became the regular T20I skipper of the Indian team after their semi-final exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The all-round cricketer has captained Men in Blue in 16 T20Is out of which India come out victorious on 10 occasion and lost five matches. Pandya has led India in series wins against Ireland, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka before he suffered his first series defeat as a captain against West Indies in August 2023.
Pandya has also led India in three ODI matches, out of which, India went on to win three and lose one game in his captaincy. He also has an excellent record as a captain in the IPL with 22 wins from 31 matches with a win percentage of 70.97%.
