The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is one of the fiercest series in red-ball cricket between two powerhouses. The latest edition of the BGT series was held in Australia, which was its 17th edition overall. Australia won it by a 3-1 margin to lift the BGT trophy after a long wait of ten years. Notably, it was the first time that five test matches were played in a BGT series between the two teams.
The next edition will be more exciting, as now it is time for India to host Australia for a five-match test series. The next edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled in the next World Test Championship cycle, which will be held in 2026-27. This will be the last series that India will play ahead of the next WTC 2025-27 final.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2026-27: Schedule
The schedule for India’s next WTC cycle hasn’t been announced until now. But as per some media reports, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2026-27 will be played in India between January and February 2027. The schedule will be updated as soon as it is announced.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2026-27: Squads
It is still a long way to go for the next BGT series. Both India and Australia are aging teams, as there are a number of players on both teams who are 30 or older. Hence, we might see some potential retirements in these two years. There is a possibility that Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja might not be there for India and Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Usman Khawaja might not be there for Australia. But below there are the predicted squads for both teams.
India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Dhruv Jurel
Australia: Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood, Jhye Richardson, Sean Abbott
Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2026-27: Captains
Both teams are in a transition period, and we might have a number of changes to the squad in the coming years or so. India might look for a new captain, as there are very few chances that Rohit might continue for another two years in tests. Hence, Jasprit Bumrah can be his successor. For Australia, Cummins is still 31 years old, and he still has a good 4-5 years of cricket in him. Hence, he is likely to lead Australia for the BGT 2026-27.
