The Dronacharya Award is officially known as the Dronacharya Award for Outstanding Coaches in Sports and Games. This award is given to coaches and mentors who produce exceptional results in sports and games. It is presented annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Coaches from around 25 sports and games have been honored with the Dronacharya Award. In the recent year 2023, a total of eight coaches were bestowed with the Dronacharya Award.
History of the Dronacharya Award:
In 1985, the Dronacharya Award was instituted as part of the National Sports Awards. The name of this award pays homage to Guru Drona, where “Guru” means teacher, from ancient India. Guru Dronacharya was a master of advanced military warfare who trained the princes of Kaurava and Pandava in military arts and weaponry.
In honor of coaches who helped individuals and teams excel in the field of sports and games, Bhalchandra Bhaskar Bhagwat (Wrestling), Om Prakash Bharadwaj (Boxing), and O. M. Nambiar (Athletics) were awarded in the same year, 1985.
The Amount awarded with the Dronacharya Award:
The winners of the Dronacharya Award receive a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a certificate, and ceremonial attire. In terms of the cash prize, the award amount is ₹15 lakh. Initially set at ₹5 lakh, the prize has been gradually increased by the Government of India in recent years.
